🏖️ Foxy Beach vs. Boulders Beach: Two Distinct Entrances
Visitors often do not realize that your SANParks entry ticket includes access to two separate sections connected by the scenic Willis Walk coastal pathway:
1. Foxy Beach (The Viewing Boardwalks)
- What It Is: Elevated wheelchair-accessible wooden boardwalks that wind through coastal bush and directly onto the primary penguin nesting beach.
- Experience: Provides close-up viewing (within 1 to 2 meters) of hundreds of penguins nesting, preening, molting, and feeding chicks without disturbing their habitat.
- Swimming: Strictly prohibited on Foxy Beach.
2. Boulders Beach Proper (The Swimming Cove)
- What It Is: A secluded sandy beach framed by massive granite boulders that trap calm, turquoise ocean water.
- Experience: Visitors can sunbathe and swim in the same tidal pools where penguins freely waddle past beach towels and dive into the water.
- Tide Advice: Visit at low tide when the beach area expands significantly; high tide submerges much of the sand.

- The Golden Morning Window (07:00 – 09:30): Tour buses arriving from Cape Town generally reach Boulders Beach between 10:30 and 14:30. Arriving at gate opening (07:00 in summer, 08:00 in winter) guarantees serene boardwalks and soft morning lighting.
- The Late Afternoon Alternative (16:00 – 18:30): After large tour groups depart, penguins return from offshore fishing in large rafts, creating lively beach social activity before sunset.
⚠️ Wildlife Safety & Ethics
African penguins possess razor-sharp beaks capable of delivering severe defensive bites.
- Never attempt to pet, touch, or feed penguins.
- Maintain a minimum distance of 3 meters outside the swimming coves.
- Avoid selfie sticks extending over boardwalk railings.
